Wed 2/12/09: Frederick Douglass International Commemoration Event

Where: West Indian Centre

When: Wed 2/12/2009, 7.00-10.00pm

To commemorate the historic visit to Leeds of FREDERICK DOUGLASS in 1859. Recognised as one of the fathers of African American Civil Rights, Frederick Douglass openly acknowledged the self-liberation and emancipation struggles of Africans in the West Indies as an inspiration, because it led to the freedom that he desired for all Americans.

We are honoured to present  a professional line up of artists, rising young talents and an esteemed academic from Rochester, the town where Frederick Douglass lived, for a feast of African knowledge-sharing, creativity and refreshments.

This event is just one of a week-long-program of activities with Leeds Metropolitan University, Leeds Museum and Leeds Bi-Centenary Transformation Project.
