Dave Gibson 1950-2017

Very sad news to share from Barnsley – Leeds SWP sends its thoughts and condolences to the family, friends and comrades of Dave Gibson –  ‘Revolutionary socialist, UCU member, Secretary Barnsley Trades Council, Supporter of Stand up To Racism, Freedom Rider, Campaigner Against Fracking and Scot’ – a great fighter for socialism who will be very sadly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him and working alongside him.

Dave’s funeral will be on Thursday 3 August, 10.50am, Barnsley Crematorium, Doncaster Road, Barnsley S71 5EH, followed by a celebration of his life at Barnsley Civic Theatre. No flowers, donations to Stand Up to Racism online or via a collection box at the celebration of Dave’s life and political activism at Barnsley Civic Theatre.

Edited to add:
Obituary in Socialist Worker, a notice in the Barnsley Chronicle here, a tribute from Sheffield TUC here, and a link to some of Dave Gibson’s writings inc from Socialist Review here.

Grenfell – why were working class people left to die?

Leeds SWP public meeting on Grenfell – Thursday 29 June, 7pm, Swarthmore Education Centre, 2-7 Woodhouse Square, LS3 1AD – all welcome

The residents of Grenfell tower died because they were poor, or black ,or both.  The Tories and the profit-hungry bosses have blood on their hands.  This is a crime against the working class.  The background is years of cuts to council budgets and the fire service – and the deliberate neglect of council estates.  Now these criminals must get their comeuppance.  Come and join the debate about how this could be allowed to happen in 21st century Britain – and what we have to do to make sure it can never happen again.

After seven years of Tory rule – seven reasons to end it

No To Austerity & Racism Kick The Tories Out Leeds Day Of Action

There will be an anti-Tory day of anger and action in Leeds on Saturday 20 May on Briggate – come down and act your rage – and if you are part of a campaign organising against Tory austerity and Tory racism please come down and bring your stall etc – the more the merrier!

https://www.facebook.com/events/447774088908668/

Theresa May has called for a general election on 8 June—it means we have a chance to get her rotten Tory government out.

We can’t allow the Tories five more years to savage the NHS, destroy education, drive down living standards and whip up racism.

We need to create an anti-Tory atmosphere so that people feel confident to get out and vote for Corbyn’s labour policies.

Every organisation fighting for the NHS, for housing, for education and for improving the lives of ordinary working people should come together and show Theresa May what we think of her disgusting government. A mass gathering in Briggate of all the organisations fighting the Tories austerity will give people confidence to fight and to get out to vote.

The following will be there (so far):
Hands Off Our Homes
West Yorkshire FBU
Unite Community
Leeds Stand Up to Racism will have a ‘Kick Racism Out of the Election’ stall
